My new friends and girl girl's update.

None other than my new colleagues here in my new job. Its actually quite interesting to meet new people.

There are a total of 14 (including me and boss) guys and gals under the team. Only one lady at the moment and the newcomer is a lady oso..

Boss is same age as me and so we can speak in the same wavelength. (not like those old uncle that is hard to explain things to them)

All my other colleagues are ok also. (Except one which maybe I would mention in my future post)

All in all, I'm quite happy with the environment but the work load is damn heavy. Especially when you are on the phone and events start pouring into your screen..... stress man....

Mum is back from Thailand and she seems happy with the trip. Girl now loves to mimic people and its seems my mother had quite a great time with her granddaughter for the pass 2 weeks. I am planning to take leave in July to have some time with her and wify... Really miss them very much.

IR at Temasek Polytechnic

I get to go to Temasek Polytechnic to help out my Master's photography event. Since it was a bright and sunny day. Took out my mod-IR cam and took some pictures of the campus.

Here's 3 of them. The effect is really interesting but it seems that the sensor is damn dirty.... most probably will send it back in to do some cleaning.

Going IR

My IR is not Integrated Resort Lah... but rather on photography. Digital Infra Red. I used to borrow my friend's Hoya R72 (a type of IR filter for lenses) and was a bit peeved by the needs to screw on the filter on and off to compose a shot. This is because once you have an IR filter on the lens, the whole viewfinder becomes literally dark. The exposure time is long also as the camera's sensor has a layer of IR filter just in front of it. Blocking all the IR lights.

As 2nd hand DSLR cameras are getting cheaper by the day (more new models come out, the cheaper the older ones hehe). I got myself another Sony A100 and mod it to become a dedicated IR camera. Got it today from my trusty camera technician and tried it just now. Too bad its at night, not really capturing the potential but the effects are quite interesting.

Here's a sample of night IR... check out the sky with some clouds. Normally you won't get them with normal cameras.

And to answer some questions on whether this camera can "see" thru clothes.... well, in theory its possible but I dun dare to try leh.... :P

Birthday Girl

Tomorrow is Girl girl's birthday, she's going to be 2 years old. My mum is already over there (since 13th) as a representative for me. (I can't go as still on probation)

Time really flies. She was also due for her annual injection. Just yesterday, she went for her jab. hehe.. Wife told me that she complained the nurse who administer the jab. And point finger at her and said in Thai "Papa will come and beat you!" hoo... I stress liao.

There's also feedback from my mum that my girl girl is the unofficial "leader" of the gang of kids around my neighbourhood liao. There are around 5 babies around my daughter's age (plus minus 1). They kind of learn and follow all the bad stuff my girl is doing. And she's the most creative in causing trouble. Just last night, she was standing while bending her head down and pee at the same time.... headache liao

Anyway, I missed them so much and really regret not being able to be there on her 2 year old birthday. Already ask my mum to pass my birthday present to her and she likded it a lot (A box of Duplo). So hopefully next year I would be around.

Cycling to work

I am working on night shift today (8pm to 8am) and its also the first time I cycle to my new workplace at Kaki Bukit. I had studied the maps and found the nearest and safest path to work is just a mere 5km ride. The path that I took is actually the Park connector from East Coast Park all the way to Bedok Reservoir Park. I am quite familiar with this route as I always jog along that connector. The whole ride only took me about 20mins. And I rode at a leisurely pace. Which is quite surprising to me as the bus ride took almost the same amount of time. Moreover, I still need to wait for our so called "world class transport". The route is also very safe, only need to cross 6 road junctions with traffic lights in total and some riding within the HDB carpark. So I guess I will ride my bike to work more often.

Speaking of my bike, its an honour to say that it has served me for 7 years liao. Time really flies man... :)

Labour Day Sunset

It's been sometime since I lay my hands on my camera gear. Spotted this on Labour day 1st of May in the evening just outside my room's window. The sun was setting and I was preparing to go to work. So I quickly got my gear out and took 10 to 15 shots of the sky. Too bad the sun already went below the horizon but still a fine catch.

Buying a condo in Thailand.

The answer is YES! for Condo's and apartment. A definite NO for any land title deed. You can read more about the laws in Thaivisa.com.

I owned a condo unit in Chiangmai and I bought it in 2005 and I have rented it out ever since. Here's a simple guide (my own experience) on what documents and steps you need to do in order to complete the process.

Firstly, shop and look around for the unit you want and ask for a price. Even if the price is right for you, you could still try your luck and bargain a bit for a better price. Do note that you need to pay a transfer/purchase tax (20% IIRC)for the unit.

Open a bank savings account in the city you wish to purchase, its ok if you already have a account in another state but the inter-state transfer fees would be a pain in the ass. So just go ahead and open one in a bank near your soon to be condo. This also helps as if you plan to rent out and could ask the management to bank in the rentals to your bank easily.

The next step you need to do is either return back to SG or ask someone to do it for you on your behalf. Have a photo-copy of your bank passbook or the original and go to the Bangkok bank branch in Shenton Way and make a transfer to your newly opened account in SGD (not BAHT). If your bank is not Bangkok bank, you may need to pay an extra transfer fee. So I highly recommend you open an Bangkok Bank account to reduce these fees. DON'T go to Golden Mile complex or Western Union to do the transfer as its consider local investment capital, not foreign (that's why I say the transfer in SGD not BAHT). The next step is crucial, ask the teller to put on the receipt the reason for transfer is "For Purchase of Condominium" and nothing else. This is very very important as this document is required for translation and endorsement by the bank and Amphur (local state office). If you do not have this document. The officers at the Amphur have the rights to reject your purchase as they have no proof of where this money come from. Bring this or courier this original document back to Thailand and go to the bank you placed your money in. Show the teller and inform her that the cash is going to be used for purchase of condo and ask her to translate and endorse both the original and the translated copy. You can also at the meantime, use that money to purchase a cashier order for the real payment for your condo. Approach the seller with these documents and both of you will go to the local Amphur to transfer the name. The seller needs to provide the Chanande (title deed) and his identifications. At the amphur, show the officer the required documents and he will need you to sign some transfer documents (3 sets) and you need to pay the transfer tax. (Before hand, you should check with the seller if its ok to split this tax 50-50. If not, you may need to bear the whole chunk.) Pay the tax at another counter and they will issue you a receipt. Then go back to the officer with the receipt and wait for the person in charge to sign the Chanade (land title deed) . After handing over the Chanade, check your name and passport number is correct. Then just hand the seller the cashier order or proceed to the bank to pay him. NEVER NEVER PAY FIRST OR IN FULL even if the seller insist he wants you to. Wait until you get the deed and check first before you pay.

And viola, you have your own property in Thailand!!
Hope this little guide helps...
